  • Why are you running for this position in the Student Government Association?

I am running for UCCS Student Body Senator-at-Large because I am deeply committed to ensuring that all students—regardless of background—have a voice in decisions that impact our campus. As a combat veteran, physics major, and first-generation student, I understand the challenges of balancing academics, finances, and personal responsibilities. My goal is to advocate for better student resources, increased support for veterans and non-traditional students, and stronger funding for STEM and research initiatives. UCCS is full of potential, and I want to help shape policies that enhance our student experience, drive innovation, and foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

  • What past experiences would make you a great candidate for the Student Government Association?

My experiences as a combat veteran, physics major, and first-generation student have given me a unique perspective on leadership, resilience, and advocacy. During my seven years in the U.S. Army, I developed strong decision-making skills, teamwork, and the ability to navigate complex challenges under pressure. These qualities will help me effectively represent students and work collaboratively within the Student Government Association. Additionally, my involvement in scientific research, including leading a space mycology experiment for the ISS, has strengthened my ability to organize, communicate, and advocate for funding and resources—skills that directly translate to student government. I am also deeply committed to community engagement, having worked on veteran advocacy efforts and participated in STEM outreach to inspire future generations. With my diverse background, I am ready to listen to students, fight for meaningful changes, and ensure that all voices—especially those from underrepresented communities—are heard and respected in student government.

  • What are some of your hobbies/interests and how are you involved at UCCS?

I am deeply passionate about science, innovation, and community outreach. As a physics major, I enjoy researching emerging technologies, particularly in space exploration and asteroid mining, which led me to develop an experiment on fungal growth in zero gravity for the International Space Station. Beyond academics, I stay actively involved in the scientific community by volunteering at the Space Foundation and participating in Cool Science events to bring hands-on STEM experiences to younger generations. I am also committed to veteran advocacy, working with the Wounded Warrior Project to support fellow veterans transitioning into civilian and academic life. Outside of science and service, I have a passion for hockey and play for the Colorado Warriors, a team dedicated to providing a supportive community for military veterans through sports. These experiences shape my leadership style and commitment to making UCCS a place where all students feel empowered, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
